2010 is a great year for Skate Like a Girl!

2010 is our 10th Anniversary, and it's been an exciting start: Skate Like a Girl is an official 501(c)(3)! What does this mean? We can have more ways of supporting our programs through grants and generous donations from our supporters.

Our February Challenge is to get 1000 individual donations ---this can be any amount!

Our February challenge is asking Facebook, Twitter, Myspace friends to help get over 1000 or more fans / followers of Skate Like a Girl to donate any amount to our Firstgiving account (www.firstgiving.com/skatelikeagirl). For the month of February those who donate more then $40 will get a new Skate Like a Girl shirt by the end of 2010.

Funds help us support free and low cost programs: Seattle Programs for February - May 2010! As well as help us provide financial support to all three chapters!

January was a busy month:

CNN HLN Morning Express came to film a segment on Skate Like a Girl for their series on Women who Inspire which will air in the Spring
Skate Like a Girl supporters met our January challenge of raising $1000 in 3 days!
We are also working on a new website with the help of Jennifer Pearce that can serve as an online resource. Let us know if there are features that you would like to see!
Shannon Monts, Chair of the Development Committee submitted our first grant! Cross your fingers!

Chapter Updates

Kristin Ebeling, Seattle Chapter Director has got three solid program partnerships with local indoor skateparks: Innerspace, Bellevue Indoor, and Skatebarn. She is also working with Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival (April) and Children's International Festival (May) to have demos. Kristin is also leading the way on a volunteer group that is making Skatebarn a better place for girls to skate!
Jessie Haungs, Portland Chapter Director is continuing the Dept of Skateboarding clinics every last Sunday of the month, and working towards stronger partnerships with YWCA, Portland Parks and Rec, and Windell's!
Erica Harris, San Francisco Chapter Director is working in collaboration with the San Francisco Skateboarding Association, and Skate Club.

We are developing a board, and currently drafting a 5 year strategic plan which we will begin to implement in 2011.

Thank you for an amazing year in 2009!

We are wrapping the year up with Wheels of Fortune II at Skatebarn on December 20, 2009 from 11 – 5pm.
This is the largest girls contest in the Pacific NW! Please do come and show your support for female skaters!
The event is FREE to watch. Or better yet, register to skate in this all ages, all abilities contest!
Thanks to families and businesses for donating money, we will have a historic $1000 purse for our contestants this year!

Skate Like a Girl presents Wheels of Fortune part deux, the biggest skate contest for the ladies in the Pacific Northwest!

Seattle, Washington (November 26, 2009) – Skate Like a Girl presents Wheels of Fortune part deux (WOF2), an all-girl skate competition on Sunday December 20th at Skatebarn in Renton, WA. (http://www.skatebarn.com/).

Wheels of Fortune
Last year was a smash, with over 30 girls signing up. Winners of the advanced division were Amy Caron (1st Place), Kristin Ebeling (2nd) and Tamara Drybrough 3rd).

WOF2 will take the same format as last year. Girls only clinic at 12PM leading into the Wheels of Fortune street contest, with 3 divisions (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). This contest is designed to be a fun and low stress jam.

Historic Cha-chang Cash Purse
Thanks to the generosity of families and individual supporters WOF2 will have over $1000 cash purse for the top three advanced skaters and winner of the ramp jam. If other individuals or businesses would like to help grow the pot and be part of this historic cash purse for Northwest female skateboarding, please contact Nancy Chang (skatelikeagirl@gmail.com).

WOF2 will be emceed by Seattle grandmaster of skateboarding: Marshall Reid of Manik Skateboards.

Clinic Information:
Skate Like a Girl will offer a one hour beginner clinic open to girls and women. The clinic will teach the basic foundations of skateboarding: board control (balance, pushing, cruising, stopping, and turning).

For those that master board control, the clinic will work with those skaters to get the feel of riding ramps, and an introduction to simple flat ground tricks (ollies, shuvits, boardslides, kickflips).

The clinic starts at 12PM sharp, all participants must come at 11:00 AM to check –in. Those with skateboards and safety gear are encouraged to bring them. Skate Like a Girl will have gear for those who don’t own their own. Those who participate in the clinics are encoraged to skate in the beginner category, and will not have to pay the entry fee. Spaces are limited so please pre-register to gurantee a spot.

Contest Information:

Skate Like a Girl Fall Programs!

Ok summer in Seattle is officially over.
We are fully ready to take on fall skateboarding!

Here's what we have for programs:
Seattle crew will be heading out to NYC for Halloween to skate and to find out: Where the Ladies At! It should be a blast, we will tweet about it.

We will come back and launch fall programs!

Carrie and Kristin have been making friends all summer at Ladies Night at Sea Skate, and we are hoping all of our new and old friends will join us to for Ladies Nights indoors at Skatebarn every Wednesdays 6-9pm and thanks to Skatebarn we can skate for FREE! There will not be any formal instructions, unless you coordinate with us in advance. The first one will be November 4th! This also happens to be Nancy's birthday, and she has promised tamales and a pinata! It's going to be so fun!

If you are looking for clinics, we will be at Innerspace for GIRLS IN SPACE, every 2nd Sunday 10-12pm. This will be girls only. $5 for drop-in skate, and $15 for clinics.

Seattle, Washington (September 30, 2009) – Where the Ladies At! Skate Like a Girl is teaming up with Skirtboarders and Girls Riders Organization to have their first event in New York: Tricks4Treats, a fun day of skateboarding! This event is free and open to all ages and abilities.

Skate Like A Girl will be offering free instructional clinics at 12pm to girls and women of all-ages on skateboards provided courtesy of Girls Riders Organization. In addition to the clinic, we'll have the Skirtboarders from Montréal demo! Confirmed Skirtboarders are Frédérique Luyet, Anne-Sophie Julien, Mathilde Pigeon, and more!

There is nothing like this all female surf movie (and it features female skaters too)! Created by Villa Villa Cola Productions, this film premiers in San Francisco on Saturday August 8th at starting at 5 pm at Potrero Del Sol skatepark.

-Bring your board and skate the park! The SLAG crew will be there along with featured skaters from the film.
-Starting at 5pm, enjoy local bands, including a set from the little ladies of the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, Black Bow, and Thee Oh Sees.
-Have a picnic with friends, bring a blanket and food.
-Movie will show on a giant outdoor screen at around 8:30pm.

Skate Like a Girl presents Bite This!, an all-ages family friendly skateboarding weekend at Seattle’s premier food and beverage showcase: The Comcast Bite of Seattle presented by Emerald Queen Casino (www.biteofseattle.com).
Bite This!
Grab your food and Bite This! The Bite of Seattle is the first festival in Seattle to host a weekend of skateboarding in the brand new Seattle Center Skate Park. Skate Like a Girl in partnership with the local skateboard community. Community and skateboard industry providing prizes and programming include: Manik Skateboards, Snowboard Connection, 35th N, Innerspace, Skatebarn, Evo, Bellevue Skateparks, Parents for Skate Parks, and Seattle Skate Park Advisory Committee.
Programming will consist of free open skates, clinics, demos, and small contests. Plus plenty of great giveaways courtesy of event sponsors. The weekend will be broken into three themes: Friday is for the ladies, Saturday is for everyone and Sunday is Family Day.
Demos!
Whether you are new to skateboarding, or an old pro, come munch on food while watching the pros skate the new Seattle Center skateboard park. Talented female skaters Amy Caron (X-Games Medalist), Alex White (featured in Getting Nowhere Faster), Tamara Drybrough (top female skater in Canada, placed 2nd in 2008 Chicks Flip Out), Esther Godoy (Australia), Kristin Ebeling and other gals will perform.
Additionally local shop skaters from Manik, Bellevue Skatepark, Snowboard Connection, and 35th N will be featured!

Schedule of events
Friday is dedicated to the ladies! With two beginner clinics, one for younger gals and another for 16+. Skate Like a Girl specializes in teaching girls and women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes. Skateboards and helmets will be available upon request during registration. Demos and product throws will occur all day!
Saturday features a co-ed beginner clinic, demos (riders from: Sno Con, Dirty Bearings, Imperial Motion, Manik, Nomadic, and others), free skate, and two best trick contests.
Sunday is Family Skate with demos and clinics provided by Scott Shinn of Parents for Skateparks and Skatebarn. Skatebarn’s Ankle Biters team will have young skaters showing off their skateboarding talent!

Clinic Information: Register day of at 11 a.m. for all clinics and contests.

Friday
Skate Like a Girl will offer two one-hour beginner clinics on Friday. The noon session is open to girls under 16, and the 6 p.m. session will be for women 16 and over. The clinics will teach the basic foundations of skateboarding. By the end of the clinic participants should be able to have board control: balance, pushing, cruising, stopping, and turning. For those that master board control, the clinic will work with those skaters to get the feel of riding ramps, and an introduction to simple flat ground tricks; ollies, shuvits, manuals.
The clinics will be taught by Nancy Chang (Skate Like a Girl co-director and 2008 L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth), Kristin Ebeling (2008 Chicks Flip Out Winner), Susannah Young (from Sweden) and Skate Like a Girl volunteer instructors.
Saturday
Skate Like a Girl in partnership with instructors from Bellevue Skatepark, and Innerspace will offer a co-ed clinic on Saturday. Participants will be broken into different groups based on the participant’s interest in learning tricks (i.e. beginners / rails / flat ground tricks / ramps).
Sunday
Skate Like a Girl in partnership with instructors from Skatebarn and Parents for Skateparks will offer a co-ed clinic on Sunday. Participants will be broken into different groups based on the participant’s interest in learning tricks (i.e. beginners / rails / flat ground tricks / ramps).
Registration:
The clinic suggested donation is $20 for day of registration. The clinic starts at noon and 6 p.m. sharp, all participants must come at 11 a.m. for the noon session / 5 p.m. for the 6 p.m. session to check - in. Those with skateboards and safety gear are encouraged to bring them. Skate Like a Girl will have gear for those who don’t own their own. Spaces are limited to 20 per session, so please pre-register to guarantee a spot.
Contest Information:
Bite This is open to any skater of any age and skate abilities. All participants must fill out all release forms. Under 18, parents/guardians must sign off forms. Helmets are required!

Support West Seattle- fundraiser for new park May 30th!

This coming Saturday May 30^th please join in on the FREE Skate A Lot festivities that will be held at the Delridge Youngstown Cultural Center parking lot (4408 Delridge Way SW) at 1pm. See the attached flyer and below for more information.

This event is intended to help raise awareness for the Delridge Skatepark that will be located directly across the street from the Cultural Center. The skatepark has a fully funded design and two meetings have already been held to gain design input from the community. A third design meeting will be forthcoming in the next few months. And the SPAC just learned that the Seattle Parks and Recreation is going to provide $500,000 towards construction and an additional $250,000 will go towards construction from the Parks for All Levy. There are currently no skateparks in south Seattle so the community is attempting to build the largest skatepark possible in the available footprint. Although $750,000 seems like a lot, more money is needed to build the largest possible facility. Therefore, the community is throwing events such as the attached to raise awareness and attempt to obtain additional in kind donations from the community and grants from outside organizations.

The next scheduled meeting for the Seattle Parks and Recreation Skate Park Advisory Committee (SPAC) will be next Monday May 11. The meeting will be in the usual location in the Parks and Recreation Building located at 100 Dexter North, Seattle, WA 98109. The current draft of the meeting agenda is pasted below.

THIS MEETING IS A VERY IMPORTANT ONE as we will be accepting public comment and having a subsequent SPAC committee vote on diverting much needed funds (upwards of $750k!) into the Delridge Skatepark which has a funded design but is lacking construction money. Matt Johnston provides a good summary of this issue at the bottom of this email – please read on. We need your support to prove to the Parks Department, Parks for All Levy Oversight Committee and the City Council members that the Delridge Skatepark deserves these funds. The Parks Superintendent, Director of Planning, and Delridge Skatepark Project Manager will be on hand to further discuss the path forward for this project and listen to our feedback. Please show up and bring your friends. It is VERY RARE that you have the direct opportunity to vote for the near-term construction a skatepark – this is your chance.

MARGE BARGE!

Just 2 weekends ago, Skate Like a Girl hosted the Marge Barge at Marginal Way Skatepark.

Sol sol sol sol sol! Skating outside the city!

Chica Riders organized the Magical Mystery Tour out to this new amusement park: Bicentenario Park in Querétaro. It has a huge skatepark that looks like super happy cause of the paint job. We left super early in the morning in this nice tour bus filled with chicas, a few parents and a few chicos. The bus was amped to go skate! When we got there Paco and Paloma set us up with the girls from the bus and from the town. They skated from noon to 5pm in the hot sun. We worked on pumping walls, which most of the girls could do really well already plus kickturns. Then we moved over to ollies, 5050 stalls, shuvits, maunallying off things, old school tricks (with Erica), and tons more. The girls just wanted to skate. At one point in my broken Spanglish, I was like "I need water, do you all need a break, and they were all naw... go ahead take a break.

There were like over 30 girls skateing. We had such a fun time! The bus ride back was insane. The girls were soo hyped on skating and walking back and fourth on the bus chanting many things, but mostly: "Sol Sol Sol Sol!" It was one of the girl's names.

Ok we slacked a bit this is from el 3 de Abril.

So yesterday we got picked up by Paloma, Paco and Micaela-- we headed to a park where we will be doing our last clinic on Sunday: La Fuente. It's a park that is built into an abandoned fountain, mostly ramps. It is really awesome. We met Raul who runs the park, and Renata who stopped by to skate with us!

After sessioning and eating our tortas we went to the skatepark that is next to La Cabeza de Benito.

It was a bunch of bowls. We skated there, and I got trapped in the deepest bowl. I had to have Erica rescue me. Between the heat and the lack of oxygen in my body, I was panicking like a rat trapped in a bowl. Dios mios, gracias Erica! I have committed to better cross training so I will never be trapped like that.

Then we took a skate break and went to visit Frida Kahlo's house. Her and Diego lived in a really beautiful spanish style home in Coyoacan. Erica noted a picture of Frida and Diego, where they were holding seals, and Paloma said they were Xoloitzcuintli, which were hairless dogs that the Aztecs bred, not seals. After leaving Frida's place, we went to a restaurant and had some traditional fare including: spinach soup in chicken broth, really good limeade, nepolas (cactus), and some taquitos with whey.

We stuffed ourselves as a mariachi band played. Micaela told us that her favorite song was playing, it was about a crazy woman who drowned her kids in the river, and at night she goes around crying... adults use this to scare kids into obedience... if you aren't good.. she will come and drown you.

We walked around Coyoacon, and went to their Cathedral. It was really beautiful and ornate inside. We walked into someone's quincenera, but tons of people were, it wasn't like we were barging in.

After being able to be part of some sweet Mexican girl's special day Paloma pointed out to us a real live Xoloitzcuintli! We were all trying to be sneaky to take a picture of it, but Paco asked the guy if we could take pictures and pet the dog. It felt like petting an oily piece of leather with tufts of hair. Erica was pretty much not into it.

Day 2: Touring the City

The first night when we got to our Hotel Paloma warned us not to go to the street food vendor across the street. So when Erica and I woke up yesterday we walked around looking for water and avoided that place. We got pastries, and sat in a beautiful church. After 30 min we were overheated and high from the air so we went back and took a quick nap.

We got up and were hungry, so we went to a torta stand, down on the OTHER end of the street. Then Erica got a papaya / guava juice next to the street vendor that Paloma told us not to go to. No diaherrea yet.

We went and took another nap.

Paloma came and got us and showed us around the downtown area. Mexico City has 30 million people, and so much culture and history. We went to the Palacio de Belles Artes, the night before we saw people skating on the all white marble building. Inside is a performance hall with huge murals done by the great Mexican Muralists.

We stepped out and walked towards the central plaza. We stopped at a traditional candy shop (Dulceria de Celaya). Then we went to a cathedral that was built on top of a pyramid. After that we went to the Templo Mayor, a "rui"n part of the Aztec's great pyramids.

The day was super busy, and at night Paloma and Paco took us to this super exclusive art opening hosted by Converse, "leyendas mixtecas a traves de pintando pasos oaxaca" where they had Oaxacan artists paint on converse shoes. The event was super posh, and Erica and I rolled in like scrubs with jeans on and wearing beat up Vans.

There were tons of random folks there, like the reggaeton sensation "gold nigga." We met the editors of Canvas (a magazine all about shoes) they had a spread on the Converse shoes. I am sure there other famous people there, but Erica and my Spanish is so poor.

We did enjoy the traditional Oaxacan hors d'arves such as chapulines
it tasted like black beans. Afterwards we went to go pick up Micaela from Poseiden.

It was a good day and night.

La Ciduad de Mexico

Erica and I flew in to Mexico City around 11:30 pm, and got picked up by Paloma (ChicaRiders.com) and Paco (reskate.com).
They are so awesome and nice. They told us about a radio interview, and we were like that sounds cool, it turned out that it was that night.

We went straight to the radio station and were unsure what to do, but we tried our best to answer questions about the clinics. Paloma and Paco helped to translate. They told us that the radio station was the biggest gov supported radio station.

So we were on Mexican Radio!

Then we drove around the city and saw some huge cathedrals that were built on top of pyramids.

We got to our hotel to get shut eye.

This morning we woke up and walked around trying to acclimate to the weather and air.
We will be exploring the city soon and skating a bit.

Paloma and Paco has set up some clinics and bus transportation to get like 20 girls to come to skatepark outside of the city. We will more photos soon.

Next skate date will be Saturday April 11th, 1pm, at Treasure Island!
San Francisco Skateboard Association (SFSA) has more then a handful of new parks in the works for SF! One of these parks is on Treasure Island. On Saturdays the SFSA drags ramps, rails, and boxes out onto the tennis courts. There will also be a BBQ going on and a DJ. In one of the three courts they will be pouring cement and anyone is welcome to help with this DIY project. You'll find the park at Avenue D and California. We may spend the whole time here or head out to Potrero or Pacifica later on in the evening. We are expecting a special guest from Brooklyn. Don't miss out!

Pride Weekend Volunteers Needed, June 27th & 28th
We are skating in the pride parade! Any ladies are welcome to join. There will be skaters from Seattle, Portland, California, Australia, and more. We will also be working donation booths that weekend and need volunteers. Money raised from this will go to SLAG SF. Anyone is welcome to help with this, including guys! Please contact us if you can:

Seattle Center Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Skate Park

Seattle Center has started construction on a 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Skate Park. The project includes improvements to one of the main intersections leading into the campus at 2nd Avenue and Thomas Street. It is expected to be completed by early summer.

Seattle Center worked closely with the skate board community on design of the Seattle Center Skate Park. It will feature practical and artistic elements, with skateable streetscape features and outstanding usability. A non-skateable divider will be built between the park and the campus, and it will be open daily (for daytime use only).

The Seattle City Council mandated construction of the Seattle Center Skate Park after property housing the former Skate Park was sold to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for development of its world headquarters. The project was funded by proceeds of the sale and other City capital funds.

The placement and design of the Seattle Center Skate Park were vetted through an extensive public process including public and Skate Park community meetings, determination and notice of non-significance, and published public notice, comment period and appeal period. The Park also was part of the environmental review associated with the Seattle Center Century 21 Master Plan.

The Skate Park site contained a pavilion built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. It runs along Thomas Street southwest of KeyArena. Mechanical and catering facilities for KeyArena are housed below site, and so the skating area will be built up above the ground (as opposed to a bowl type design).

I'll cut to the chase:

Friday, Jan 23rd:

Staycee picked me up from SFO and showed me the new Potrero skatepark (aka the mission park). Drenched with a constant onslaught of rain, i ended up slipping out while walking down one of the roll ins-- this would be the first of many non-skateboarding related bruises. GREAT! We later met up with Erica, grubbed down, and wandered around. The day was spent heckling bicyclists, pedestrians and hipsters. Erica and I walked around for a bit, and i was more than happy to play the giddy tourist.

Saturday, Jan 22nd:

The day started around noon with an 1 1/2 hour drive to The Ranch. A little early, we set off to the Ripon skatepark to meet up with Kristin, Ashley, Holly and Brice. As it turned out, the park ended up being the meeting place for everyone else.

The next morning was spent at Ripon, some lowcard bbq ... i'm not even sure

Monday, Jan 26th

Best.Day.Ever.
Finally had the chance to skate the new Potrero skatepark, and it was everything i anticipated it to be, and more. Let me start by saying thank you to Erica who mapped out all of the skate spots in SF. Seriously, it's legit. Max and Erica both had things to do, so i was left to check things out. I love public transportation. The N.Judah took me to the civic center, where i later boarded the BART to 24th and mission. Skate east to potrero then south about 8 blocks, and WALLAH! You're there.

The bathrooms are locked, but the FRIENDLY locals suggested i head up to Casa Sanchez, a mexican resturant a few blocks from the park (Head up to 24th, go west, it's a block after the liquor store and will be on the right side of the street). Bonus perk; if you show up with your skateboard, they hook you up with free drinks.

Blah blah flight home blah blah

The point is, if you're in SF and you don't skate Potrero, you're freaking blowing it.

Hey all- Nancy here!

November has been amazing with my historic birthday aka the new Obama Administration, McCain's perfect concession speech, and things moving forward for Skate Like a Girl!

Just want to say thanks alot!, tack så mycket, merci, vielen dank, gracias!
For everyone! Thanks! Seriously, what a long list of people to thank, for being able to rally behind Skate Like a Girl, especially getting the vote online at womenofworth.com. Things are moving fast! I was even on the local all female morning show Brooke and Monti! Those ladies are rad! We put it out there for them to come skate with us anytime.

Everything is super exciting! Just like the contest we will be rocking Dec 13.

Here is the latest scoop: we have a $300 cash purse and we are hoping to sweeten the pot! I am hearing rumors of all sorts of gals stoked on this and they will be skating/driving/flying up!

Seattle, Washington (November 18, 2008) – Skate Like a Girl presents Wheels of Fortune, an all-girl skate competition on December 13th at Skatebarn in Renton, WA. (http://www.skatebarn.com/).

Wheels of Fortune
This will be a fun filled day for skaters and fans. Skate Like a Girl will start the day off with a one hour beginners skate clinic at 11AM leading into the Wheels of Fortune street contest, with 3 divisions (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). This contest is designed to be a fun and low stress jam. Skate Like a Girl co-director and co-founder Fleur Larsen says, “We really want to make this an event that skaters of all abilities can come to, have a great time, and be cheered on in a supportive environment The contest will also showcase talented skaters from all over the Northwest.”

Historic Cash Purse
Thanks to the support of Insight of Washington (http://www.insightwa.net/) an online high school, and Team Soapbox (www.teamsoapbox.com) a local PR firm, a $300 cash purse will be showered on the top three advanced skaters. Live Music w/the Valkyries and a Ramp Jam Open to Guys
Wheels of Fortune will be emceed by Seattle local and pillar of Northwest skateboarding, Marshall Reid of Manik Skateboards. Tunes will be spun up by DJ lil’ armenia. In addition to the street skating, Wheels of Fortune will invite any gentleman skater to register to join the ladies in a good old fashioned ramp jam, while the Seattle based all-female rock band the Valkyries (www.myspace.com/thevalkyriesrock) jam out. There are limited spots, so please make sure to pre-register at skatelikeagirl.com starting December 1st.

Clinic Information:
Skate Like a Girl will offer a one hour beginner clinic open to girls and women. The clinic will teach the basic foundations of skateboarding: board control (balance, pushing, cruising, stopping, and turning). For those that master board control, the clinic will work with those skaters to get the feel of riding ramps, and an introduction to simple flat ground tricks. The clinic will be taught by Nancy Chang (Skate Like a Girl co-director and 2008 L’oreal Paris Women of Worth) and Skate Like a Girl volunteer instructors. The clinic costs $15 for those who register on-line, and $20 for day of registration. The clinic starts at 11 AM sharp, all participants must come at 10:30 AM to check –in. Those with skateboards and safety gear are encouraged to bring them. Skate Like a Girl will have gear for those who don’t own their own. Those who participate in the clinics are encoraged to skate in the beginner category, and will not have to pay the entry fee. Spaces are limited so please pre-register to gurantee a spot.

Contest Information:
Wheels of Fortune is open to any female skater of any age and skate abilities. We recommend that skaters pre-register online between December 1 – 10 to receive a $5 discount, and to have a guranteed spot in their perferred division. All participants must fill out all release forms. Under 18, parents/guardians must sign off forms. Helmets are required!

Honored by L’Oréal Paris for her Exceptional
Community Achievement and Volunteerism as part of the
Third Annual Women of Worth Program

Seattle, Washington (October 30, 2008) – Seattle resident Nancy Chang has been honored as a Woman of Worth by L’Oréal Paris for her outstanding commitment to community achievement with her work for Skate Like a Girl. Chang is one of 10 honorees from across the country that will be recognized for her outstanding volunteer achievements and positive influence on her community. From November 10 through November 24, a public online vote will take place at www.womenofworth.com to nominate one National Women of Worth honoree. The National honoree will receive an additional $25,000 donation for her cherished non-profit organization.

Chang will be honored at the CNN Inspire Summit in New York City where she will receive $5,000 for her charitable cause plus a matching $5,000 monetary donation will be made in her name to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, the eleven-year charitable partner of L’Oréal Paris.

Chang was chosen as a Woman of Worth honoree from nearly 3,000 applicants by an elite group of judges, which includes: Jacqueline Hernandez, Chief Operating Officer of Telemundo Communications Group; Soledad O’Brien, CNN Anchor; Dayle Haddon, L’Oréal Paris spokesperson; Elizabeth Howard, Chief Executive Officer of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund; Anne Garrett, Executive Director of the Microsoft Alumni Foundation and 2007 Women of Worth honoree, Karen Fondu, President of L’Oréal Paris and Anne Talley, Senior Vice President of Marketing for L’Oréal Paris.

Nancy Chang directs Skate Like a Girl, an organization promoting female skateboarding by providing free lessons to underprivileged girls, ladies-only contests, week-long summer skate camps and other events, and instructional clinics to female groups. Skate Like a Girl’s mission is to empower girls and woman of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes, through skateboard programs, an arena where women and girls are typically excluded. Skate Like a Girl has served over 500 young women in the Seattle area, setting up workshops and camps in surrounding teen and community centers.

Kristin and I piled in to my car and drove down to Portland for the best 24 ish hours we have had!
We had two missions: Go to the SLAG pdx benefit that Jessie the PDX Coordinator put together with her crew. They raised close to $1000! Yeah!

Big ups to: the Egyptian Room + Staff, bands: Ms. Led, Saucy Yoda, and thats what she said, biz that donated raffle prizes, and for all of you all that came out to dance and buy raffles!

The other mission was to skate and do some filmage.

After a long night of living it up, we woke up to skate. Our travels included: Burnside, a street spot close to Burnside, an abandoned building with ledges + possible asbestos floating in the air, and another even sketchier building that had possible high lead contents.

I will tell you this epic tale through photos.

Starting at Burnside we waited for Moira, Jessie, Kristin and Chrissie to show up. We rolled in and saw a group of plus size ladies all dolled up and were like, oh, a photoshoot, this looks burlesque.

As they are posing, a few start getting topless, this caused quite a stir. Then all of a sudden this guy decides that he wants to get naked and compete with the ladies (B6). Then things got really weird and we left, but before that we snapped a photo of Kristin with her Blue Steel face.

We fled the scene and went down a few blocks to this loading dock. Chrissie, Kristina, and Kristin killed it as Moira filmed. Here's some stills of Chrissie.

Afterwards we went to this place where skaters put up some ledges. I was a bit afraid of asbestos particles.

Bellingham and Burlington

The other weekend, our co-director Nancy Chang organized with some of gals from up north to have a skate date. We opted to meet up at Bellingham which isn't too far up the i-5 from Seattle. So last Sunday Nancy, along with Muriel, picked me up at my house in Ballard and we made our way up. The park in Bellingham is pretty sick. It used to be a crusted over horrible park with death trannys and awkward rails, but Grindline came and saved it, adding a sick ditch on one end, and a bowl on the other side. The gals from up here ripped the bowl with mach speed. I got my kicks on the rainbow rail and in the ditch. After talking to some local male allies, we decided to travel a lil south to hit up Burlington. This city also is home to the Vans outlet, where us ladies couldn't resist the temptation of the "buy one get the other 1/2 off" sale. Burlington was a great time until I collided with our friend Jessyca. Kind of a gnarly way to end the day.

Portland Mission

I got work off for the weekend so I could make it to Portland. I wanted to make it to our clinic on Sunday and do some filming with Moira. After Attempting to find a train, which were all sold out due to the holiday weekend, I settled for a Greyhound (something I had never done before). $30 for a ticket wasn't bad considering paying for gas to drive down would've been more expensive probably. I made it to the station, and after being accused of cutting in line, I boarded the hound. Feeling like Forrest gump on his first bus ride to school, I found my Jenny to sit next to...a twenty-something gal playing a Nintendo DS on her way to Portland's annual anime convention. Everything was pretty legit about the motorcoach except for the bathroom, which was covered in tags and smelt like shit. Did I forget to mention the door didn't close? Definitely blanketed the seat with toilet paper before I laid my precious behind on it.
So I got off the bus with stiff legs, and sweating profusely. Portland is hot. Krisitina swooped me up in her dads car and we rolled away...yelling random stuff out the window... which is becoming more and more of a tradition for us. We picked up her black rocket from the auto shop, and if you have been keeping up with our blog, you'll know why it was in there. Then we met Moira and her couple friends at the river... some Bellingham lokes Donkey and his sister Danielle, and Portland's own Traci. After taking a dip we opted to make a Burnside mission. A couple beers down I rolled up the park with a smile...it had been a few moons since I had been here. A few back-D's and grinds later I had my fix. Kristina and I left to get some pizza and ended up watching every gals wetdream of a skate video...aka:girl skater. The only thing Gallaz ever manufactured that was cool. I awkwardly passed out in her dads bed next to a picture of my homeboy Jesus.
After waking up startled, thinking that Kristina's dad was home early, only to realize it was Kristina coming home from her job interview, I put on my pants and ate some breakfast. We met up with Chrissie, who had made it down the night before, and our beloved father Moira. I got a line at Burnside, after much frustration. We moved on to lurk around portland street spots running into some people getting their wedding photos taken, homeless men with no shirts on, and chads telling us to do tricks. We got some random clips. Then we made it to Popeyes for some dinner. Delicious tastes of my New Orleans homeland. After noshing and watching "The Wash" staring Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg at Moiras, we headed out to skate more. Chrissie headed out, and what now became a trio made it out to the new Beaverton skatepark. Pretty random set-up, but fun. BIG stuff and very baby stuff. I dare you to try and ollie up the step-up. Moira ate some shit, Kristina ollied over a trash can and I clipped ollying up a curb. We were over it pretty soon and me and Kristina dropped Moira off so she could get to her dance party. Kristina cooked up some mean garlic bread and asparagus at her dad's pad for us. After taking a shower and watching the Element video, we passed out.
We woke up pretty early for the Dept. clinic we had to be at by 11am. As usual, Kristina lagged and sagged. We got coffee and donuts and made it to D.O.S. fashionably late. The clinic was huge! It was rad to see so many girls learn how to drop in or roll off a curb..etc, etc. After filiming a lil line with Moira, and meeting up with Nancy, Muriel, and portland SLAG folk, we took it to the streets. Filmed some mean clips outside this antique shop. Tall ledges, kicker, loading dock, and a steep 5 stair. We almost bombed hills together, but got rained out. We checked out this "crust" punk show at Burnside and skated a lil bit. Being super tired and sore, I begged Nancy to take me home. Said my goodbyes, and hit up Burgerville on the way out...as all Portland missions should end. Had to make it back up to Seattle to work on Labor Day.

Polar bears are drowning and it's your fault. Stop driving!

As luck would have it, I had the wonderful burden of a janky car situation before our invasion of Canada. Upon returning to the states, and $680 dollars later, my car was up and running. After several days of entertaining Nugget, Esther, and Chrissie (trifecta was flippin' rad), my car was running stronger then ever. After dropping the girls off, I headed home...that's when my luck caught up with me. Call it kharma for being obnoxious at trifecta, or what have you- but long story short;

I was going about 70mph on the freeway when the hood of my car popped up, curled, and smacked my windshield which obstructed my view. I quickly pull to the shoulder of the road (which happened to be the fast lane) and call AAA. I get the insurance estimate after getting my car towed home, and wait for my dad to come home so I can tell him the GREAT news. Needless to say, he wasn't stoked.

Living without my car was shitty the first time around, as it had been in the shop for a week before Canada. This time around, I decided I wasn't going to rely on other people for rides, and I wasn't going to sit around for another week and wait for my car to be fixed.

So instead, I grabbed my cruiser. I skated across the freeway back into town, I skated to friends homes, I even skated at our janky ass skatepark (which consists of shitty wood and an oversized pyramid) for the first time since Freshman year.

I fell back in love with skateboarding. The love I felt before I got my license. I fell in love with cruising. How does that song go? Kick, push, coast..

Now that my car is fixed, I'm making a challenge for myself (one that i hope you'll take on also) to start skating more, driving less. It's fun and it's cheap. Meeting your friends in town for some grub? Skate there. Headed to the park down the street? Skate there. Plan ahead, pack a water, bring a backpack, get off your ass and skate.

Product suggestions: Zip Zingers are super cruisers, they're small, fast, and you can actually skate on them if you need to ollie a curb or something. Plus, they're easy to stop unlike longboards. Or, invest in some large, soft, wheels for your normal board. They'll make the ride much smoother, and you'll totally enjoy skating without having your knees rattle.

Earlier this summer SLAG held an all-girls skate jam to showcase some of the local rippers in the Seattle area. Chrissie, Muriel, and yours truly attended, among others from Bellingham and other surrounding areas. We snapped a few photos. Backside 180 by Chrissie and a frontside tail by me.

Artoleptic (live painting, music, arts/crafts! and skateboarding) was so rad. It was the first time I skated with a whole crew of asian girls! We mad sessioned the worst place to skate for anyone learning: the curb next to the Sno Con Waterfront store. Though there was this challenge that didn't stop my Asian Girl Gang from tearing it up.

I drank so much Vitamin Energy water and skated from 12 to 6pm. I was super wired, and a sweaty mess.

We taught about 7 girls to shred the curb. I perfected the shuvit/5050stall/body varial/shuvit off the curb!

We met hidehiko from Low Card.

I'm taking this opportunity to spam yet another website with my filth.
08.23.08 ...as in yesterday :

Moira, Chrissie, Jessie, Esther le molesta, and I met up for what we had hoped to be a productive day of filming. I guess we were productive in that we avoided all skateparks, which is incredibly rare as I proudly flaunt the fact that I am a skate park whore. The first stop on our street conquest were the "portland public ledges"...little did we know that "ledges" meant waxed curbs and tall benches. But hey, when you're super ripper status like Chrissie, it aiiiin't no thang. She threw down a fakie fifty front shuv out, and half-cab noseslide. This spot is located in NE portland. It's actually really fun, undercover, and has a few obstacles such as newspaper bins and concrete blocks that you can move around. Plus, the benches are of that plastic/fake wood material, so no wax is necessary. It's BUTTAH! Definitely recommended for those hot or rainy days. To get there, go toward the Broadway bridge, take the street before crossing it (right onto Benton) and then a left onto Dixon.

Next up- the janky banks on SE Water Way (you can take the OMSI exit and follow water way all the way down until you see them on the left). The run up is choppy, you have to get up a curb first in your run, and the banks are steep. However, they're incredibly fun and you quickly get used to it. I enjoyed it for sure- just watch out for traffic. There are plenty of cars, bicyclists, and buses using both streets.

Before stuffing our faces with huge pita platters at a local Lebanese resturant, we parked on 6th and starke (or somewhere near it) at the "antique ledges". No wax required, just tons of pop. These ledges are basically metal window seats that are insanely slick and probably in every decent skate video known to man. We passed on this session, but just down the street was an array of loading docks. About the height of Chrissie ( 5'1" ha..ha) these aren't too shabby. Decent run up, decent landing. Although I suggest lurking around the block a bit as some of the loading docks will have scrap metal and crappy concrete that will rape your skin. A little bit of patience should bring you to the right ones.

That's three spots within 5 minutes of each other. GET IT GIRL!

Just thought I would post a lil video I made a few weeks back of a few slag gals at Bellevue Highland Skateboard Plaza.

Summer 2008! Super Crazy Awesome Part 1

SLAG Summer 2008 Tour aka the Winnipeg Tour was off the hook!

I am so stoked on girls’ skateboarding right now!

Thanks to Elysia (Rugged Riders), Jacqui Comp and her crew at the Manitoba Skateboard Coalition, all the girls that braved this trip and shredded up two countries: Erica Harris (SF), Jessie Haungs (PDX), Kristen Ebeling (SEA), Kristina Narayan (PDX), Esther Godoy (Melbourne, Australia), Chrissie Lathrop (SEA), Beth Nenniger (Vancouver, B.C.), our camerawoman/skater Moira Morel (PDX), and photographer Audrey. Thanks so much for such an awesome trip.

So here’s the story. I guess let’s set-up the story for why this was awesome…
1. The fact that Jaqui emailed us (me + Elysha) out of nowhere early in the spring and was like…. you ladies must come to this or else! Like a moth to flame we got our act together and hustled to shred!

2. We started off with a mini-van, and a handful of gals wanting to skate and get footage and it grew.

a. Did I mention that Erica Harris (randomly emailed us) decided to come help us with our Seattle skate camps (out of love for skateboarding), and before this we didn’t really know anything about her except she was a fire fighter?

If I were more paranoid I wouldn’t have invited a girl who could cut me up like a fire line (ask Kristina what it feels like to endure the wrath of Erica) to stay with me for a few weeks. Luckily for all of us I am way too trusting and was like, “yeh come up, and oh yeh, do you want to drive over 3000 miles to skate in Winnipeg?”

b. So we had a crew of gals representing Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco, AND then Esther Godoy who rides for the Element team was like, “Hey, I am Esta, I want to join this skate trip!”
So we were like, “Hell yeh!” And then all of sudden this thing started snow balling.

c. Erica, who is the queen of networking met Beth Nenniger skating in Vancouver, and then the trip became an international all girl skate squad!

3. The girls drove basically non-stop from Portland to my house in Seattle and then through the night to Montana. They hit up Montana, Fargo, ND and all of sudden the SLAG gmail and myspace were filling up with love letters. Guys and girls were like: “You changed our lives, please, please, oh please come back again.” Here's some photos from our myspace.

Not hearing the story until I flew into Winnipeg (I had to go to my cousin’s wedding and couldn’t drive out with them), I was like these girls are heartbreakers!

4. Flying into Winnipeg, I thought I was going to get deported, since I didn’t have a return ticket. "Yeh, so like I am here to meet up with friends to go skateboard your country." I was a bit nervous, but the woman was nice and let me in with a Visa (I have never gotten one to go to Canada before), and I hopped in a cab to meet up with the girls.

When I got to the Plaza, there was a pretty huge crowd watching the girls skate. I got there in time for the advanced skaters. It was super hot, but the SLAG team was tearing it up. I see the girls, and they are skating so hard. I guess Kristina bumped her head hard board sliding a rail, and then got back up and slid it again. Esther, Chrissie, Kristen, and Kristina were hucking themselves and cheering on everyone, including Tamara (Vancouver) and Annie (Montreal). It was so overwhelming to feel the love.

5. I met Jacqui and Elysha! They were pretty much the reason we went to Winnipeg.

6. Most all of our gals placed! Advanced: 1st = Kristen, 3rd = Esther, 4th Kristina, and 5th Chrissie. Intermediate: 1st Jessie, and 3rd Erica.

7. Partied and hung out with awesome girl skaters and saw what amazing community organizing the Skateboard Coalition of Manitoba, local business and the local government officials could do together. They collected so much product, and $3000 in cash to deal out to the advanced skaters! They even had flowers and trophies.

8. Taught a bunch of girls to skate.

9. Drove over half of the Trans-Canadian Hwy. Not die-ing on the sketchy roads in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Seeing road signs we have never seen before and trying to interpret the meaning. Killing like a few thousand bugs on our grill and windshield. Erica is seriously the champ of cleaning off dragon fly guts!
Saw/was in the middle of a crazy thunder and lightning storm in Regina. Regina was gushing! We were in a grocery store and the power cut out, it got crazy. The Canadian Rockies are so beautiful.

10. Random skate seshes in rest areas. Girls sessioned a few rocks.

11. Cochrane park was super fun! Esther asked a pre-teen boy to switch for his mountain scooter. Kristina was flying over pylon, board sliding like it was going out of style. The girls got in the bowl and road it like a train gang. They were like the Harlem Bowl Trotters!

12. Pulling up into Vancouver at 5 am, with a few girls pulling out their sleeping bags and sleeping on the side walk like bums. Serious.

13. Hanging out at Anti-Social with Michelle and skating her ramp. Getting Nugget to skate, hangout, dance and then drive back to the states with us.

14. There’s so much more, but I am going to end with: the U.S. border customs agent was the best. He was so nice to us.

A New Place to Skate - SEA.

Nancy is headed off to Atlanta to do a clinic as part of Mondo Homo on the 24th. It should be fun to reconnect with our Georgian friends! Besides that the SGS clinics ended last week. The gals sent us thank you notes! It was so nice. We hope to see them at our camps in July.

We have a fun summer planned with Secret Skate Dates, summer camps, a SLAG Summer 2008 tour with a few ladies from SEA, PDX and SF. We will be headed off to Winnipeg (cross your fingers it works out).

We attended the May SPAC meeting, along with Seattle Center skate park advisory meetings. Really great things happening for skaters in the city. Lots of people working with the Seattle to make more parks... like the lower Woodland Park ... it is opening up June 7th!

Also June 21 is go skate day!

We have lots of exciting things that are happening that we will fill you in on as things get firmed. As always, battling the SLAG site to make it nice, informative and navigate-able. So come back and check in on our progress

Thanks for all of your emails and support! SLAG is currently volunteer run, so it makes it hard to update all the time, have a fancy looking website that is maintained, and all the stuff we really want to do/be in order to get more gals skating! We are currently exploring ways of becoming a program that offers more and is self-sustaining. Who knows, we might go for a 501(c)3?

Let us know if you would like to help make that happen.

Clinics & Camps - SEA.

SLAG Seattle is running skate clinics with Seattle Girls' School (SGS) for the month of April. This is only for girls that are attending SGS (sorry). Other than that, we don't have any events scheduled currently except for 2 summer camps.

The older teen girls camp will be at the Kirkland Teend Union Building, and the younger girl camp will be at SGS (opened to all girls). Register online for the Kirkland camp at KTUB or Seattle camp at SGS.

We are trying to plan other skate events, so please check in periodically. If you would like to be on a newsletter, please email us: skatelikeagirl@gmail.com! or with any questions.

SLAG PDX will host girls only clinics once a month on the last Sundays of the month. 11 am - 1 pm. February 17th, March 30, April 27.

DOS (15 NE Hancock). $10 suggested donation (no one turned away for lack of funds). All ages, all abilities! It's the perfect opportunity to learn in an encouraging, positive environment. SLAG volunteers are there to help you learn! Meet other local girl skaters! Learn new things! Have fun!

SLAG on the snow was really great. We had so much fun shredding it up with girls. Now spring is here and we are excited to come out and hit the pavement, and maybe go surfing! For sure we have two camps this summer July 7-11 for older teens @ KTUB (Kirkland) and July 14-18 for grades 4-7 @ SGS (Seattle). Register online for the Kirkland camp at KTUB or Seattle camp at SGS.

Also we are sitting in on stakeholder meetings for the new Seattle Center skatepark.
Please attend the public meetings at Seattle Center: March 25, May 8, and June 5 all 6:30 - 8 PM. The purpose of this meeting is for the skaters/public to meet the design team and provide input on their wish list for skateable terrain. This is your chance to directly impact the design – PLEASE SHOW UP AND PROVIDE YOUR INPUT.
